Lying
to the right of the Rhine, the rolling hills of the Markgräflerland
stretch from the Rhine plains to the Black Forest. Some of the
best German wines are grown here in the sunny Tuscany of
Germany. In the fall you can help the wine-growers harvest
the grapes. A nourishing meal in the open air, pleasant company,
relaxation, laughter even the hardest work in the vineyards
is fun here.
The many thermal mineral baths (Bad Krozingen, Bad Bellingen,
Badenweiler and Baden-Baden) provide havens of peace where guests
can be pampered in modern and relaxing surroundings. The clear,
well-tempered water bubbles up from ancient volcanic rock, pulsing
out of the massage jets. Simply lie back and relax heavenly
a pleasure that was enjoyed in this area by the ancient
Romans. The luxury of past times can be appreciated in the ruins
of the baths at Badenweiler.
The Black Forest mountain chain is the sister range to the Vosges
mountains in the Alsace. These thickly wooded hills with their
dense network of ski routes, hiking and cycle paths enjoy a healthy
climate with many hours of sun and extremely good air quality.
You can breathe deeply here. Breathe freely. Enjoy the intoxicating
scents of nature, gather fresh strength. Towns and villages have
been lovingly renovated, often retaining the character of the
Middle Ages. Old crafts are to be found throughout the region,
such as clock-making, wood-carving, glass-blowing a fascinating
journey through time, a romantic pleasure.
Freiburg, known as the capital of the Black Forest
is a cosy town with green open spaces and a well-preserved Gothic
character. The cathedral, with its 116 m spire which visitors
can climb, is outstanding for its medieval stonemasonry and glass
painting. The Town Hall (Rathaus), the Corn Exchange (Kornhaus)
and the medieval city gates are also important historic buildings.
Freiburg has been a university town since 1457.
The student lifestyle can be sensed throughout the city. The city,
with its almost Mediterranean atmosphere, exudes a joie de vivre
which is catching: street cafès, garden restaurants, a
lively coming and going set against a historical backdrop, a glass
of wine and all is right with the world. |
